“The Madonna with Saint Giovannino” is a 15th century painting attributed to Italian Renaissance artist Domenico Ghirlandaio. The painting has an unusual object in the background, which some have theorized could be an extraterrestrial body.

“The Madonna with Saint Giovannino” is on display in Florence, Italy’s Palazzo Vecchio as part of the Loeser collection.

Alien theorists speculate that the disc-shaped object in the upper right of the painting is possibly a UFO, according to Stranger Dimensions. The object is notable because it has no obvious context in the painting.

In the painting, a man with a dog is standing in the background over Mary’s shoulder. Some believe the man is looking up toward the object, while others think the man is looking away from the object. There are also theories that Mary could be shielding the two infants from the possible extraterrestrial object.

Another explanation for the unusual disc-shaped object is that it could be a Christian symbol, such as a glowing star. Religious artwork created around the time of “The Madonna with Saint Giovannino” often included such symbols.

A third possible theory explaining the object is that it was simply an error made by the painter. However, when that section of the painting is magnified, it seems more likely that it was intentionally added to the painting.
